Tequila is known to most of us as the staple of a great night, but those who haven’t yet met the mother of all tequila – mezcal – a whole new world awaits.
It’s true that tequila is technically a mezcal, but there are several differences that distinguish tequila and other mezcals. Our very own Matheus tells us more.
“In raw terms, the main difference you’ll notice is the smoky taste of Mezcal, and it is often sweeter and richer. The two derive from different regions of Mexico and are made from different types of the agave plant, plus they are distilled differently.
For tequila, the agave is baked or steamed, whereas for mezcal the agave is roasted in a fire pit in the ground (which is where the smoky profile comes from). Those differences have a big impact on the flavour of the final product”.
We could tell you more, but the best way to truly learn about mezcal is to try it. Ask our team to recommend your best match from our extensive selection.
